VELO One Dot to Six Dot: Understanding VELO Dot Strengths

With so many brands suddenly pushing nicotine pouch products in front of us, it can be difficult to decipher which ones you can actually try. VELO opts for a more simple (albeit complex for some) explanation of strength, by using dots as the strength guide. While this may seem a lot more simple than trying to understand mg/g or mg, it can be confusing. As someone familiar with nicotine pouches, having used them for over a decade, I get why VELO use the dots. But, in actuality, the dots really don’t offer up much of an explanation for new users. So, in this guide ill walk you through the VELO Dot system, and give you insights into how it compares against other brands.

Key Takeaways

VELO Dot System

Key Takeaways: VELO Dot Strength System

  • The Dot System Simplifies Strengths – VELO uses a 1 to 6 dot visual guide instead of mg, which can be helpful but also confusing for new users.
  • Strength Varies by Pouch Format – Mini dots (1–3) are very light, Slim format (2–6 dots) ramps up to 17mg with stronger nicotine delivery.
  • Mint Feels Stronger – Even at equal nicotine levels, mint flavours feel more intense than fruit due to menthol's sensory kick.
  • Physiology Plays a Role – Hydration, time of day, and user experience level all affect how VELO strength is felt.
  • 7 Dot Rumours are Circulating – Enthusiasts speculate on a 7-dot, 20–25mg VELO arriving, but no official product exists yet.

Quick Introduction to VELO Pouches

British American Tobacco stuttered with VELO through the early stages of manufacture. The brand has been known as both Lyft, and EPOK before BAT finally made VELO the universal brand name. As a large corporate entity, BAT also struggled to find the brand identity initially as the brand opted for a more medicinal approach to colour ways and packaging. In 2024 VELO went through a rebrand that catapulted global sales. The interesting new flavours, coupled with exciting flavours pushed VELO to the forefront of nicotine pouch sales. Both online and in-store, it has been in high demand since the rebrand.

There is a level of consistency that exists with VELO that some smaller independent brands struggle to match. Being backed by corporate giants BAT offers huge benefits in terms of marketing power, and production levels. As such, VELO has moved to among elite status in the nicotine pouch game. Anyone that has heard of pouches, has likely heard of VELO. For some, it could be considered a gateway product. The strengths are light to mid-strength with a smooth nicotine uptake without being overbearing on the system. The one caveat is understanding the VELO dot system which could be considered a stroke of genius, or a confusing mess for new users.

Why Do VELO Use Dots & Not MG

For us as snus users, we are used to seeing the nicotine levels presented in mg, or mg/g. For most of us, we have gotten familiar with the higher the number, the higher the strength. But, VELO did it differently! The higher the number of dots, the higher the strength.

It could be argued that the dot system is perhaps a stroke of marketing genius. By using dots as the measure of nicotine strength, VELO has created its own strength infrastructure. Similarly, it also excludes the brand from certain topical conversation by some standard. Either way, the dots do actually represent the mg of nicotine - just not very well.

There are several strength levels (which we will go into) from the brand. Also, many of the flavours are replicated within these strength levels. It could be easy to purchase your typical flavour, completely wrong strength. Many of our customers have made errors while purchasing online. Consider the inertia of shopping in a busy store, and you could easily walk out with the wrong VELO for you.

So How Strong are VELO Dots in Actuality

One of the most difficult things to explain to a new user of nicotine pouches is how strengths work. It sounds quite simple, higher the mg, the higher the strength. Or, in this case, the more dots, the higher the strength. But, in actually using the products frequently you begin to build a picture about the nuanced differences both brands and products have in terms of strength.

Before we get into the VELO dot strengths in detail - here is a table outlining the strengths, and flavours available inside of those strengths.

1 Dot to 3 Dot Mini

In all honesty, the mini VELO has to be one of the most entry level nicotine pouches on the market. For a frequent user, or someone that has ever smoked, the nicotine in these pouches wouldn’t touch the sides. Couple that with the mini format of the pouch, and you have the perfect entry level pouch. Regardless of which flavour, or level of dots, you are unlikely to feel anything, unless you are a complete novice to pouches. At the three dot level, the most inexperienced of users may find some sensation, but extremely unlikely for even casual pouch users.

2 Dot to 4 Dot Slim

This is where VELO starts cooking on a little bit of gas. The 6mg slim, in actuality, is almost identical to the mini. So, you can expect a similar kind of buzz, virtually non-existent at the 6mg. The next level up is the 8mg pouches, these offer a short lived sensation on first load, but dissipates within seconds.

It is at the 10mg, and 11mg that the 4 Dots start to come into effect. The fruit flavours are smooth in flavour, well balanced and counterweight the growing strength well. The mints offer more of a punch, and new users would definitely feel the initial hits from the mints. Crispy Peppermint is one of the hardest hitting VELO pouches at this strength level. It is known for the icy peppermint taste, and accurate strength level. For me, it is one of the best VELO pouches by far.

3 Dot to 6 Dot

At the higher echelons of VELO dot strengths comes the hardest hitting. The 10mg through to 14mg are pretty similar across the board in terms of strength performance. But, the 17mg VELO is where the flavour intensifies and the strengths start to punch. The perceived strength, for new users, can be quite strong so I advise caution when moving up to this strength level. Making the move from the 3 Dot (10mg) through to the 6 Dot (17mg) can be bridged pretty well by using a fruit pouch like Wintry Watermelon. The strengths from VELO are hardly groundbreaking in comparison with some independent brands. But, for new users, 17mg begins to push the envelope of nicotine tolerance.

VELO Dot Strength: A Couple of Factors to Consider

As with any nicotine pouches there are factors that effect strength performance. VELO is consistent and made by a corporate manufacturer, so quality is more often ensured. But, the brand seems primarily to be aimed at new and casual users. After years of using nicotine pouches I have developed an understanding as a consumer and user of pouches. I am very familiar with VELO as a brand, also the variables that exist within the products.

Mint vs Fruit Dot Strengths

Once you start to push past the 10mg pouches the differences in strengths become noticeable. At 4mg, and 6mg, the sensations are negligible. But, at the higher levels you will find that the perceived strength of the mint flavours are a lot higher. What do I mean by perceived strength? Well, there are sensations congruent with mint nicotine pouches that are typically matched by flavoured pouches at higher strength levels. The strength just feels a lot more intense in the mints. This is certainly true at 14mg VELO (or 4 Dots). For new users, I advise moving between strength levels using the flavoured pouches as the bridge first. This allows for a smoother transition to the next nicotine strength level without becoming overbearing on the system.

Physiology

If you are new to VELO, or nicotine pouches, then it will be difficult to really understand the role physiology plays in nicotine strength. But, your own physical state can determine your tolerance level to nicotine at any time of day. For example, the first pouch of the day, usually hits the hardest. If you are anything like me, and you roll over and put a pouch in before even getting out of bed - it could rock your world. Feelings of light headedness and nausea can be common at this time of day. I am what you could consider an experienced user, but I would only leave lighter pouches on the bedside table for the morning. If you are using VELO 6 Dot, in a mint variant, and you are a new user, you should save those for once your body is fully awake!

During the day, the effects of nicotine can be a little lighter provided you are hydrated and fed. Remember that nicotine is a substance, and so it interacts with your body differently by each person. Among us snus heads, there is a saying that water brings you back to life. So, if you do feel nauseous, or feel you have taken one too many, or one too strong, keep a bottle of water handy - it is an instant saviour!

VELO Seven Dots: Captures the Imagination

There has been talk about VELO moving into the 7 Dot phase at some point. There has been much discussion by enthusiasts about the super strength VELO due to be released. But, so far, it has been nothing more than talk. By estimation, a 7 Dot VELO product would be somewhere between 20mg - 25mg. That strength level would bring VELO into direct competition with some of the independent brands that have ruled the higher mg sector for quite a while. Personally, I would like to see it. Whether they will or not is something else entirely!

Is VELO’s Dot System Right for You?

Understanding VELO’s dot system takes a bit of time and possibly a few trial and error purchases. While it looks simple on the surface, the dots do not always translate clearly to nicotine experience, especially for new users. That said, VELO remains one of the most consistent and accessible pouch brands on the market. Backed by British American Tobacco, the brand delivers balance, flavour, and reliability across its strength ranges.

If you are a beginner, stick to the one to three dot minis or slims. If you are moving up, the ten milligram and eleven milligram pouches offer a satisfying bridge without being overpowering. For those with more experience, the fourteen milligram and seventeen milligram ranges are where VELO finally delivers a punch, especially in the mint profiles.

Ultimately, VELO is not trying to be the strongest product available. It is designed for mass appeal, and it succeeds by offering a polished experience. As long as you understand what each dot really means, you will find VELO pouches that fits your routine perfectly.
